REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals.
The REACH regulation (EC) No.: 1907/2006 was approved by the EU Environmental Council
on 18th December 2006 for all Member States of the European Union and was put into
effect as of 1st June 2007. The pre-registration of chemical products needs to be
done between 1st June 2008 and 1st December 2008. The complete regulation text
(approximately 850 pages) can be found here.
REACH's main objective is to minimise or terminate, where possible, the use of toxic
and/or hazardous materials, an aim to which Schmits fully subscribes. In fact, we
have been pursuing this policy for decades. The customers of Schmits have an important
role in effectuating this regulation as a down-stream user of one or more of our
products, either in their own production or as a re-seller of our finished product.
On a regular basis, we are kept informed about the upcoming REACH regulation and
Schmits is an active participant in stakeholder groups where the REACH regulation
is discussed. As a manufacturer and important supplier, we have been preparing
ourselves for the new regulation for some time now and we have set up a detailed
process to comply with its obligations.
We therefore plan to pre-register all products we supply. However, we reserve the
right to refrain, for any reason, from final registration in certain instances.
